assessment
At Ormond School we believe that assessment informs the learning. To allow this to happen we have two forms of assessment: formative and summative.
Formative Assessment
· Teachers & students co-construct appropriate learning intentions and success criteria
· Teachers give regular feedback to students on their work, to assist them to the next stage of their learning
· Teachers guide students to understand more about their own learning
· Samples of work are displayed in class to help students to understand what high quality learning looks like
· Students can talk about their learning (often recorded digitally) so they may analyse the next steps in their learning
· Formative assessment provides roadmaps for the learner and teacher alike
Summative Assessment
Summative assessment is used at certain times to mark students’ progress over time and it is collected from a variety of sources including nationally referenced tests. These tests demonstrate student learning in a fair and inclusive manner. The data is then used for reporting to students & parents, Board of Trustees and for planning purposes.
All Ormond School students work towards achieving successfully against the National Standards.
Assessment is used to plan programmes according to students’ needs and abilities and to provide support or extension programmes where needed.
In conjunction with Formative & Summative assessments, each July we hold 3 Way Conferences between student, family & school. These informal conferences are led by the student (with support from the class teacher) and are an opportunity to celebrate progress and to set goals for future learning. We are proud to have a near 100% turnout for these conferences. Portfolios of student work are kept throughout the year and are sent home in conjunction with the 3 Way Conferences in July and at the conclusion of each year in December. These portfolios are a visual & permanent way for our students to share their work & progress with their whanau.
