literacyReading & writing, speaking & listening and viewing & presenting are all crucial skills that enable learners to engage successfully with all aspects of the curriculum. At Ormond School, these components of literacy are integrated every day in our classroom programmes. We engage students in literacy by connecting learning to their everyday experiences and interests and through the use of a variety of delivery methods and stimuli. All students work towards achieving successfully against the National Standards and towards becoming effective and confident communicators & critical thinkers who are prepared for a lifetime of learning.
At Ormond School: - we make connections between oral, written & visual language and integrate literacy across the curriculum - we include aspects of inquiry learning into our literacy programmes - students will read, respond to and think critically about a variety of texts and media - we deliver daily instructional teaching of writing - we provide daily guided and/or shared reading lessons as well as the opportunity for students to participate in daily home reading - we provide stimulating and appropriate models and texts - we provide opportunities for students to become more sophisticated oral communicators (daily sharing in class, hosting and presentations at school assemblies, school and interschool speech competitions) - students use digital media to improve their literacy skills (to publish writing, create media presentations, record and critique reading, collate their work, engage in literacy games) - we deliver daily instructional spelling programmes: Joy Alcock - Switch on to Spelling & Jo Mackinson - Literacy Evolution - we use standardized and formal assessments, as well as ongoing informal assessments to inform future planning and teaching - we carefully plan programmes according to students' needs and abilities and provide appropriate support or extension programmes where needed |
