At Ormond School we have a broad curriculum overview of "Local, National, Global" which is imparted into all topic areas throughout the year. We cover all areas of the national curriculum: Maths, English, Science, Technology, Social Sciences, the Arts, Health & PE and Te Reo.
Programmes are differentiated according to students needs and extension/support programmes provided when appropriate. The senior & junior syndicates work well together and we have many times when our whole school works together and where junior children are helped by senior students.
Our students are assessed against National Standards twice a year. We have 3 way conferences between the child, parents/caregivers and teacher at the conclusion of Term 2. Each child has a portfolio showing their progress and these go home in the middle of the year and at the end of the year.
We often go on class/school trips and bi-annually visit our local marae - Pakowhai and pa - Popoia. Our kaumatua is Dave Hawea and he takes a strong interest in our school. We have continued to build a relationship with the Waihirere area too and our students have worked with DoC staff to help control pests in the domain at Waihirere.
We are a Bronze Enviroschool and have to date completed many projects including: native animal mosaics, nature garden organic tactile pathway, worm farm, planting native plants and fruit trees, building a hexagonal vegetable garden, designing an enviro friendly playground and building a riverstone pathway. Our enviro education has included field trips to Grays Bush and snorkeling at our local Marine Reserve.
Our students participate in a wide range of cultural and sporting activities and we have many visiting experts to help us in these areas. Our students compete successfully in sporting & cultural endeavours against schools from the wider Gisborne District, including schools that are much bigger than ourselves.
